Sophie abseils her fears away

This weekend Sophie our Training Consultant overcame her fears to raise vital funding for bereaved children. Using ‘Positive Self Talk’ to empower her to take the leap and overcome her fears for the wonderful charity Holding on Letting Go, here is her story.

Six months ago I was asked if I wanted to take part in a charity abseil for Holding On Letting Go, a charity supporting bereaved children. You know what it’s like, you say yes because it seems like a great idea at the time and after all it¹s not for another 6 months!

Even setting up my charity donation page didn’t phase me, that’s the fun part, telling everyone about this exciting, terrifying thing you are about to do, all for a good cause. Then the day arrives, high winds at the Olympic Park meant a significant delay for those taking part in the abseil and suddenly you are there, waiting around for hours in the freezing cold looking up at the Arcelor Mittal sculpture asking yourself WHY?

Then the team photo with HOLG T-shirts on and I was reminded WHY! Holding On Letting Go supports bereaved children and young people aged 6-16 years, children who have lost someone close to them who are struggling to cope and find ways forward. I was abseiling to raise funds for this charity because the money raised will go towards a bereavement weekend where children will meet others facing similar challenges and through a series of discussions, music, art and therapy they are helped to talk about their feelings and are helped to hold onto good memories and let go of painful ones.

Looking happy and positive!

So, that’s the WHY answered, now it’s the doing part. We were told that it was unlikely we would abseil that day because of the delay the high winds had caused and of course you are not allowed to abseil in the dark (thank goodness!!). 17:30 arrived and suddenly the team were radioed from the top to say they could take 5 more jumpers’, so we were on and just at the time when I thought we were going home.

The sun was rapidly setting, the brief and safety instructions went past in a blur and suddenly I found myself 400 ft up in the air with the setting sun behind me being told to let go and relax! Of course, why wouldn’t I?!! It was freezing cold and blowing a gale and suddenly I was over the edge and on my way down thinking I’m not ready, I have an itch, I need to blow my nose, I need the loo and all manner of excuses but it was too late. So, I took a deep breath and had good look round at the view and after a bit of severe Self Talk I told myself to relax and enjoy this very much one off experience.

And so I did it and it was breath taking and surprisingly quiet being so high up. I winched myself down the rope, dangling hundreds of feet up in the air and it was a fantastic experience, raising much needed funds for an exceptional charity and overcoming some personal demons at the same time.

I would recommend it to everyone.
