What is Game Based Learning?

We are experts in game based learning (GBL), people ask us a lot – What is Game Based Learning? And so GBL is using games to teach or impart knowledge in order to make it more ‘sticky’ in order to improve retention and subsequently ROI. Don’t let this be confused with Gamification, which is rewards, points and gaming aids that are used as a motivator to learn.

Consider the use of Monopoly in schools. GBL is using Monopoly to teach pupils about money, banking, counting, property development, playing nicely etc. while offering incentives to play, creating league tables and rewards for winning is gamification.

In business it’s important to ensure that incentives and rewards are aligned to the target audience and that the behaviour it drives is in line with clearly defined business objectives.

Game Based Learning in Education?

Schools consistently demonstrate an understanding that GBL stimulates students including the use of  counting and pairs games in primary schools, the use of Monopoly to teach money / the value of money in secondary education and the increasing use of on-line resources in secondary and further education – to name but a few.

Video games have the components of optimum learning – motivation, clear goals, interpreted outcomes, and immediate detailed feedback as well as their ability to cement learning by allowing students to share tactics, experiences, and explanations.

Our brains like visuals – pictures; we think in pictures, we dream in pictures – usually in full Technicolor -so it makes sense that we should use pictures, imagery and visualisation as part of any solution which help you to remember.
