Return on training investment

Return on training investment clearly depends on what you want to achieve. We believe in ongoing training programmes and retention of multiple ideas for sustained learning, although very hard to measure, there are ways to do it – the key to a return on investment is to ensure training sticks it is only then you can measure success .

Here is our visual for the curve of forgetting, showing how we forget information for the long term over a period of time if what we learned is not revisited.

curve-of-forgetting-2

But if we were to return to the info, freshen up by reading, discussing, putting into action etc, there is a significant lift to our retention of the lesson.

And in the retention we clearly see the improvement in the return of training investment.

If (as an example) we presume now that the initial curve line to 100% was a Training course or training program costing £10,000, by day 30 the value of that training has been reduced to c£300 through loss of information.

However, if we then invest a further 20% (£2,000) to ensure that the information is delivered and retained by a programme that allows time and a little budget to revisit the lessons learned, then as seen in the model above, the value of our training –  based on 90% retention –  is £7,000 (90% of the original £10,000 less the additional £2,000).
