Lecturing is not the best training

A recent study by the CIPD (Chartered Institute of Personnel Development) found that most UK organisations are using outdated methods for training their staff

, often using learning methods which are now considered the least effective.

The biggest underlying dynamic in training and learning today is the rapid and unexpected confrontation of a corps of trainers and teachers raised in a pre-digital generation and educated in the styles of the past, with a body of learners raised in the digital world of Sesame Street, MTV, fast movies and “twitch speed” videogames.’

To prove this, just 17% are planning to reduce their reliance on classroom and instructor-led courses over the next couple of years, not realising that Lecturing is not the best training out there. This is partly because ‘today’s trainers and trainees are as described above from totally separate worlds.

More positively the CIPD found that around 11% of these trainers are using e-learning as part of their structured learning courses.

Judy Willis (Neurologist) states, ‘Neuroimaging studies and measurement of brain chemical transmitters reveal that students’ comfort level can influence information transmission and storage in the brain (Thanos et al., 1999). When students are engaged and motivated and feel minimal stress, information flows freely through the affective filter in the amygdala and they achieve higher levels of cognition, make connections, and experience “aha” moments. Such learning comes not from quiet classrooms and directed lectures, but from classrooms with an atmosphere of exuberant discovery (Kohn, 2004).

Ergo our ‘students’ (Sales representatives, customer service consultants and managers etc.) who are used to receiving information from numerous sources and mediums, aren’t stimulated by hours in the classroom and will most likely positively respond to a more frenetic learning environment.
